“Some individuals may perceive their losing fight with gravity as a sharp pain in their back, others as the unflattering contour of their body, others as a constant fatigue, yet others as a unrelentingly threatening environment. Those over forty may call it old age, and yet all the signals may be pointing to a single problem so prominent in their own structure, as well as others, that it has been ignored: they are off balance, they are at war with gravity.”
— Ida P. Rolf
“If you can imagine how it feels to have a fluid, light, balanced body, free of pain, stiffness and chronic stress, at ease with itself and the earth’s gravitational field, then you will understand the goals of Structural Integration (AKA Rolfing).”
— Emmett Hutchins
“I had the ten sessions with Robert and all I can say is ‘WOW’. I literally feel like I’ve overcome gravity. I now recommend Rolfing to everyone as a result of my professional and personal experience.”
— Dr. James Perkins, D.C., N.D.
So if our bodies are at war with gravity, as Ida Rolf suggests and if Structural Integration (AKA Rolfing bodywork) can actually shift our experience to one of having, “a fluid, light, balanced body, free of pain…”, how are such dramatic changes achieved? The answer lies in the connective tissue or fascia that wraps around all of our muscles. A combination of different assaults (injury, the body’s compensations for injury, repetitive patterns at work and emotional factors) will shorten different muscular wrappings and both compress the body and pull it out of alignment and into a “world of pain”.
Structural Integration applies hands-on-pressure to shortened fascial wrappings to get them to lengthen and return the body to it’s original design, dynamically balanced and supported by gravity.
Confucius is quoted as saying, “The way out is through the door, how come so few people use it”. This site is dedicated to opening the door to the body’s original design.
